Air conditioning is an essential part of almost every Australian household, but there’s many types available and understanding the differences can be a bit confusing. Installed in millions of homes across the country, split systems are one of the most popular types of air con, but what exactly is it? And how does it work? Read on for some helpful information to help you determine if a split system is right for you.

A Split System Air Conditioner Consists of Two Main Components

These are a wall-mounted indoor unit that blows conditioned air into the space, and an outdoor unit that expels the heat gathered from the indoor system. Unlike traditional central air conditioning systems that use ductwork to distribute cooled air throughout a building, a split system air conditioner does not require ducts.

How it Works

In a split system, refrigerant gas is fed into the compressor located in the outdoor unit, where it is pressurised and heated. The pressured gas then moves through condenser tubes, where it turns into a liquid, and is de-pressurised. It is then subsequently cooled and converted back to gas.

The indoor unit sucks warm air from the room and passes it over an evaporator coil that has been cooled by refrigerant gas. The cooled air is then blown back into the room by the indoor unit’s fan.

At the same time, the outdoor unit takes in the hot air from the indoor unit and releases it outside, transferring the heat from the indoor space to the outdoor environment.

Inverter Split Systems

The compressor is what pushes the refrigerant through the system. In standard splits, the compressor only has two modes, full speed, or off. When the compressor is at full speed, once the desired temperature is reached, it switches itself off. In an inverter split system, the compressor has the ability to change its speed, allowing it to feed just the right amount of refrigerant through the system. This makes an inverter split system much more efficient than a standard split system.

The Advantages of Split System Installations

A key advantage of split system air conditioners is their flexibility in cooling individual rooms or zones. Multiple indoor units can be connected to a single outdoor unit (known as a multi split system), allowing for customized temperature control in different areas of a home or building. This makes them suitable for homes, offices, apartments, or any space where installing ductwork may be impractical or costly.

Split system air conditioners also offer energy efficiency benefits. Since there are no ducts involved, there is no loss of cooled air through leaks or inefficient distribution. Each indoor unit can also be independently controlled, allowing for precise temperature settings, and minimising energy waste.

Split system installations provide an effective and efficient cooling solution for various spaces, offering flexibility, high energy efficiency, and targeted comfort control.
